The auto industry is doing great. More cars are built and sold in the US today than ever. Detroit just isn't where there are built en masse anymore.
The entire Great Lakes region has similar issues. Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Erie, Detroit, Toledo, Chicago and Cleveland have all lost massive manufacturing jobs. Pittsburgh has reinvented itself. Chicago was always very diversified. The major white collar and engineering workers in the auto industry are still centered around Detroit, but much of it is in the suburbs....which are actually not bad. Not sure what Cleveland and Buffalo are doing to stage a resurgence.
I can say this about Midwestern/rust belt towns.....people there are generally better grounded and less full of themselves than the east coast cities like Philly, DC, or New York.
