Student Ticket Passbook Rookie

Does anyone know how a mobile student ticket works? I don't have passbook on my iPhone. I just bought a mobile student ticket and they sent me a screen shot of the bar code. Should this work, or will I need to have passbook? Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I received the barcode as a pdf. on my Windows phone. I just open it up on my phone, scan it and walk through.

Should work the same with pdf's of print at home tickets too, right?
