The school systems aren't great, work options are underpaid, property values are still high and taxes will cripple you. Other than being the emerald triangle what does that area offer? And really what does it offer a 6 year old?

I plan to homeschool my (unlikely) children until 12 or 13, and if I lived out there, it's because I'm not having to worry about money.
I would just want my kids to grow up in an area with plenty to do outdoors.

Uh. Folsom, CA is pretty great. People seem to enjoy living there, the schools are good, it is safe, lots of interesting outdoors options, access to transit, etc. Probably no more expensive than Austin.
