My most common smell that takes me back is sometimes when a diesel passes and has that smell I remember from riding the school bus when I was a kid. Catch a whiff and it instantly puts me back on that school bus. Not all diesels have that distinct smell for some reason, only sometimes. May not make sense but it's true for me.

When I smells vehicle fumes, I always think of a particular time when I was 4 or 5 on a school bus and smelled those fumes.

Saw this after I posted. Right there with ya.

I associate the smell of burning wood in the distance with winter and of one of my old friend's hunting camp in Natchez, cooking breakfast on the still smoldering fire built the night before, playing king of the hill on top of the bails of hay (not sure how a neck wasn't broken with 10-15 11 year old boys spearing each other off the top of those).

Smelling a boat engine reminds me of summers on the Amite River and several friends' birthday parties at the various camps. School bus smell brings me back to middle school. Mold to cleaning out my sister's and mom's house after Katrina. I think of my dad every time I smell a cigar, but he still smells like a cigar so that's hardly a distant memory.

And I always can tell when a girl in my area is wearing the perfume my wife wore back when we had just started dating.

I have a terrible memory, but a smell will bring out ones I never could recall, more than any other sense.

Every now and then, I'll get a scent of a perfume that an old girlfriend from Junior High or High School wore, and that's certainly an odd feeling.

The strong smell of pine and cedar brings me back to my grandfather's camp from some of my first visits...I guess those first few times I went, I tried to internalize everything I could since I was finally "old enough" to go to the camp.

I remember the smell of the creosote plant,
When we'd have to eat on Easter with my
Crazy old uncle and aunt.

But really I do remember the smell of creosote early in the mornings and dew covered lawns when we would visit grandparents house as a young kid.

Information about odors and memory are more connected than the other senses. Odor information runs through the olfactory bulb (smell) , to the hippocampus (memory), then to the rest of the brain. This is why olfaction and memory are tightly connected.

Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyworld. Went back a few years ago with the kids and was floored by how it all smelled the same, the water and rocks and stuff. Instant 80s nostalgia.

The smell of freshly cut grass ALWAYS brings me back to two-a-day preseason football practices in high school in the late 70s in Ajo, Arizona.
