My understanding of the hire was the search firm was impressed by Steve's business acumen, and that Luck didn't want the responsibility of firing Mack. You just never know how things will turn out until they happen.
Too late now, Luck has moved onto bigger things.

Korn/Ferry recommended Luck.
Jeff Hunt (a Texas alum) apparently convinced former Texas president Powers to hire Patterson instead.
