They had to stop the bleeding.
Patterson ran off many season ticket holders with his attitude and especially his threats of ending grandfathering of season tickets (you keep your tickets if you pay the same donation, which doesn't change with the market rate).
That imminent policy change appears to have been scuttled with Patterson's firing.
Patterson thought that someone would step in and pay eight or ten times what Joe Fan was paying every year for 20 years, and which Joe Fan would continue paying in perpetuity.
Johnny Nouveau Riche blows in the wind, and that's who Patterson expected to step in and gobble up the newly opened prime seats. It didn't happen.
I do feel sorry for those season ticket holders who figured that ending the grandfathering policy was imminent, and who just threw up their hands and decided to not renew.

That is sad.
But let's not kid ourselves, he wasn't fired because of how he treated Joe Fan. He was fired for how he treated Mr. Millionaire Ex.
