Here's what I don't understand about Clara (among other things), she's seen at least three doctors in person. According to the intro from Season 7, she's somehow seen all the doctors.

Doctor was consistently getting younger. Then 12/13 is old.

I don't think she remembers all of her "selves" that saved the Doctor. So, she's really only seen Smith. And he is "hers". Capaldi is too different, too harsh. She can't handle it at first.
I think it was a splendid analogy for his Moffet thought all the new fangirls would hand Capaldi.
