Fair enough.

I guess my point is that the people who are cousins with Alan Smith and who have relatives that work at Goodison, etc. could pick on your fandom the same way you do with others.

And they'd sound just as silly to me.

It must be a soccer thing because I was on a UK football board many years ago, and they liked to talk about their fan pedigree too.
"Ya well my grandfather played with Sir Stanley Matthews."
"My grandfather WAS Sir Stanley!"

On and on it went.

To go the question, I don't have a team really.

-I like Crewe because my kids had a coach who was from there.
-I like Sunderland because I got sick of the Geordies picking on them.
-I like Everton. Same reason except Liverpool fans.
-I like Southhampton. I guess they would be the team I'd most like to win the league and don't have a good reason.
-I like Charlton. The story of the Valley and their fans is cool.

-I like Arse style of play. Not the team necessarily.
-I have a soft spot for City because my kids played for a coach who was one of their superstars years ago and a truly good guy.
-Used to hate Chelsea, but Drogba was just too cool and Jose has grown on me. Steve Spurrier with a scowl.
-Hate Liverpool because they haven't done anything in years and their fans act like they have.
-Hate ManU worse. Arrogant managers (other than Moyes who I like a lot) and fans. No offense
-Hate Celtic for no other reason than one of the worst people I've ever know personally was a fan.

edit: and SCH-CSB. Serious.

calling a non English man a plastic doesn't hold much water

but now calling someone from England a plastic will get people going.

Chelsea and City fans from England get called plastic bc they only show up when the team is good or a whole bunch of more people started supported them after their take overs. Even now with City the hint that they are not in great form or playing a top club not as many people go.

Now with United and Liverpool fans being called plastic, it stems from basically the 50's and each club being successful and having their fan bases grow domestically and now across the world. Throw in also lots of people from the north west have left for the southern parts of the country and took their fandom with them passing it along to their kids who keep passing it on. Thats why United and Liverpool are so big in London.

Other teams fans always rag about both clubs fans catching the train from Euston to Manchester/Liverpool and its true

Arsenal fans are viewed as just nerds a lot of the time.

Just to clarify, I hadn't kept up with European footy in years, and had no idea who the kid was. He just happened to be from the tiny town that all my buddies were from. But soccer was my best sport as a kid, and living over there for a year (also lived in East London, West Ham territory, and in Finchley with a huge Tottenham fan) really got me back into the game. Especially the EPL and also on the International level. I admit I don't keep up like I used to, which is why I've never posted much on this board. Maybe I'll try and be a little better about keeping up this season. Cheers, dudes.
