There is no message. they are fricking 8 years old and 99.9% of them don't care about winning or losing and they are playing for the fun of it. Jesus. They are 8 fricking years old. You can teach kids the value of competition while also pointing out that you don't have to win to enjoy athletic competition
If there is no message, then what do they need a trophy for? A trophy is a representation of an ACCOMPLISHMENT.
Playing a season of swarm ball is not an accomplishment. The kids who won the league accomplished something. I would hope that if my kid wasn't on the winning team, he saw how fun going up on stage and getting a trophy and getting recognized was...and wanted to practice hard to hopefully be there himself next season.
You guys realize that the whole "entitlement generation" is a real thing, and this is contributing? Kids in college are exhibiting much higher rates of depression, their parents are handling discussions with professors and even bosses, etc...all because kids don't know that it's possible to fail. They can't handle it because they've never had to.
Simple fact, every one is not special, everyone is not a winner. It needs to be learned at some point.

Yet half the guys on the winning team contributed nothing.
