Guilbeau: Miles “I’m not considering it (red-shirting Guice or Brossette)

this is a gg article.

BATON ROUGE – At the moment, LSU has four tailbacks practicing very well – sophomores Leonard Fournette and Darrel Williams and freshman signees Derrius Guice and Nicholas Brossette.
If everyone stays healthy, LSU coach Les Miles may have a nice problem on his hands. He may have to consider red-shirting Guice or Brossette so as to give one an extra year instead of playing one of the two so sparingly in 2015 that it could be considered a wasted season. But Miles likes having a stable of backs, so he is unsure.

Me either...can't stand him...

He should've just greyshirted one and then redshirt him next year so he'll still be eligible in 6 years... since apparently we are in a fantasy world where RBs stay in college until after exhausting eligibility regardless of age.

Actually you're in a fantasy world to think that either of those recruits would take a grey shirt. A grey shirt commits to a team and then pays his own way for tuition. I can guarantee neither of those would be open to that.

And I get that you were being sarcastic. But it's a nice problem to have these players on the roster.

Neither would be here five years anyway. LSU could have used Michael Ford as a true freshman, but wanted to preserve his redshirt. He went pro after his rs junior year and wasn't even a highly regarded pro prospect.

Lol no shite he's not redshirting them

Both would be the "bell cow" anywhere else in the country, we have a good problem, the rest of the SEC/Country just don't have a clue yet

I don't expect Brossette to get many carries barring injury, but he will likely contribute greatly on special teams. You don't redshirt RBs.

I would rd shirt guice and Brossett unless we have a injury

As others have said, a redshirt for either is likely pointless as most RBs of their caliber are 3 and done regardless. We are lucky if we get 4 years out of either.

Not just no, but hell no. Guice is a potential home run threat. This is talent that just doesn't redshirt outside of injury.

Definitely. We're going to have a lethal rushing attack this year. And if we can get average QB play to keep defenses honest, watch out.

I'd bet these guys were promised playing time as a freshman when they were recruited. You can't redshirt them unless they let down their end of the bargain, which is learning the playbook. Plus, you want four tailbacks - three is a must because these guys are always getting knicked.

Just another example of a so called journalist whose understanding of the college football landscape is outdated. The redshirt option is impractical when applied to an athlete that is likely to be NFL ready, particularly when it is anticipated that they will be a sought after commodity as well.
The red shirt defers your eligibility to play college football but does not deffer your eligibility to enter the draft.
So 1 redshirt season plus 2 playing seasons or 3 playing seasons both equal entering the draft at the same time. The only difference is that LSU does not have you as a back to rotate in and another person for opposing coaches to game plan for.
I would never redshirt a top level talent in this day and age. Of course, I don't have to make those decisions anyway.

Exactly. In what possible world is this newsworthy. In addition to what everyone else is saying in this thread, you want to keep your starters fresh. LSU is not going to go with just 1 or 2 featured backs.

to give one an extra yea
A lot of coaches are beginning to realize that redshirting doesn't automatically provide an extra year at the school. If these guys are as good as advertised then going to the NFL as a redshirt sophomore is likely.
Play'em now.

redhsirting is becoming pointless. you end up actually getting one less year if the player is good. he just leaves after his RS sophomore season

You can the burn the redshirt at any time if the player is needed, it's not like they are locked out of playing because you give them a redshirt.
