I think the best combo one can get is the stand alone Frigidaire fridge and freezer. They are actually priced really well and end up cheaper than many french door fridges for the set. Also they are based on the classic Frigidaire design. At worst the $125 control board will pop. Much better that the problems you can get with a GE or LG and Samsung. Hell LG now uses a new compressor technology they are not sharing with non certified techs. So very few will be able to work on new LG fridges with the linear compressors.

Stand alone fridge is a smart buy, but you lose your icemaker.
(unless the stand alone freezer is next to it)

Thanks for the info guys. I'll probably end up just getting the counter depth because it's just us two and space isn't a huge factor (at least for a few years). Will look into the frigidaire brand. The location of the fridge is on the right side of the island. $500 doesn't seem like a whole lot when I factor in the thought that the SO will point out the other every time we are in the kitchen.

The Frigidaire stand alone are the best price, but I don't think the best deal. I had a customer get one. The ice maker wouldn't work, which happens sometimes. Frigidaire sent repair people that couldnt get them apart. They are not that common. They ripped the handle off them and had to replace the front. Also, the stainless is super thin. When they shut the fridge with something in the door and it's not enough space, it leaves an idention you can see if the light hits it right on the outside.
To the question at hand, get a counter depth. They are the best solution within a budget. A built in is too expensive for what you get.
