Go to the WW2 Museum. Eat lunch at Cochon. Grab dinner at Peche, or if you want fancy, go with Herbsaint, Emeril's, or Gautreau's.

Would wait till it cools off a bit..
First time, do the tourist bit
See Jackson square, Street car ride down St. Charles, a walk down Bourbon and Royal st. once if you've never been.
Keeping it cheap.
Get a Muffaletta, zapps and Bargs from Central Grocery, for a picnic on the levee.
Cafe du monde if you never been.
Johnny's po-boy & drinks at Napoleon house and Lafitte's.
Hurricane at Pat O's

This is exactly what the wife and I did and had a great time, took her shopping as well. Followed by Jazz Brunch at Commanders Palace and a Saints game. Awesome Weekend.
