commuting from home
His life will suck. This is going to hold him back more than anything, but I can understand doing so for economic reasons. If you are doing this because you don't think he's "ready" yet, you're the reason why.
Where is he commuting from? This makes a big difference in how to get to campus. Assuming he's coming from Ascension Parish, I-10 should be completely fine at 7:00am.
In order to get tickets, students submit a request for tickets. They are handed out on the basis of a points system, which means that freshman sometimes, but don't always get them. They will usually at least be able to get tickets for non-conference games, but big SEC matches are harder to get. The thanksgiving weekend game is always available. Students get priority points throughout the year by attending free sporting events that will be advertised. There's generally 1 or 2 point nights for women's soccer, a couple for volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, women's basketball, baseball, ect. All sports other than football are free for students with their ID, so a freshman can rack up points quickly.
If they don't get a student ticket through the university, things get more complicated. They can buy student tickets second hand, but they check ID's at the gate. Usually, as long as the person on the ID sorta looks like the person using it, they're good. The issue comes with the risk factors involved. There is also a system of getting "upgrades" on student tickets, but these are often not available for marquee conference games.

The name on the student ID doesn't have to match the name on the ticket.
