Basically, I bought it to calm my wife's nerves. She is terrified at the idea of our infant son somehow getting ahold of a gun, that just so happens to be on a 7 ft high shelf,

Are you going to be keeping it on a 7' tall shelf to appease the wife, or are you going to use it as a small safe to hold a gun that you will take out in case of emergency? If the latter, inside of a locked ammo box 7' high on a shelf is a terrible idea.

I don't think the OB board is pretentious. It's just that you're looking for praise for some half cocked idea you came up with. For whatever reason, you're trying to spend the absolute minimum on a "safe" when there are very reasonably priced models that will do the job 10x better. You being a dumbass doesn't make me pretentious.

Not looking for "praise" as you put it. I was being ever so slightly facetious about the "pretentious" remark. I also wasnt calling you out specifically.

Despite my sarcasm, yes, this board does get pretentious regarding certain things.

For a small example:

I know we have all seen enough debates threads from Glock vs 1911 owners, and 9mm vs .40 fanboys, to write responses for almost any Outdoor Board "regular" on either subject if a new thread was started. Also, almost all of the "regulars" could impersonate other "regular"'s stances on these subjects so well, that everyone else on the board would not know the difference between the two. Both sides, especially in the Glock vs 1911 debates, are very pretentious.

Yeah, no pretentiousness EVER happens around here.

I currently keep the gun in a wooden box on the lower shelf of my bedside table when we are in the bedroom. It is the perfect height for me to roll over and grab. When I leave for the day, it goes with me.

As far as the 7 ft shelf is concerned. I just plan on keeping most of my ammo and non "self-defense" handguns in there. I am currently attempting to figure out a "safer" way to hide the gun by the bed. I am thinking about setting up a holster to hold it on the backside of the head board.

Outside of my carry gun, a few .22 rifles, and 2 shotguns. I now have a compact and easy to carry box holding all of my handguns and ammo. Something a thief can simply walk out of my house carrying. So as to break into at his own convenience and leisure. It's a felon's perfect present, full of crime committing goodies, one that I gift wrapped just for him.

I love my wife, but pregnancy has dialed her hysteria levels to over 9,000.

I'm on Workman's Comp, until I finish being a full time student, and a volunteer youth pastor. Reasonably priced is a relative term for me.

I want a "real" safe, and I have a plan to get one. It will just be awhile. Because once I start saving, I'm not going to buy the first decent one I can afford. I'm going to wait and get the one I want.

Thank you for your input, DSD. Sorry if you thought I was, I dunno, being a brat about all this? Wasn't my intention. Was trying to be a little funny through sarcasm, relay some information, and get some questions answered.
