You're sort of missing the point. The point is that there is an area of the brain that, if manipulated, produces an experience similar (if not the same) as the mystical experience reported by religious individuals.

No I'm not missing the point at all. Digesting the quoted section of the OP wasn't difficult.
Like I said, some funny hat won't be changing faith. You either have it or you don't.

What I'm really taking from this is that there is a helmet that will make you all fricked up and you can pass a drug test the next day.
This is progress people.

By design, apparently.

So basically an instant massive dose of psychedelics without the hassle of chemical risks?

I'm not going to argue with you on who is right or wrong, I was just assuming it would be easy to see, even to an atheist, that this device won't be the main reason that a person chooses to have faith in God or not.
Sure, you can attempt to argue that it is the end all be all, but that's just silly.

I suspect that religious people will suggest that this means god is real.
It could be used either way.

No, the device will not. The individual's brain, however, is the factor in play. Choosing seems an odd word, considering this scenario.

You know what they say about assuming, I presume?
Just because they can make people have a certain type of reaction with their "funny hat" does not prove at all that some people are predisposed to religion. Well to be honest I truly hope that isn't what it means, that would be so sad. Imagine if 20% of people were lost from birth, that would be a tough pill to swallow.

When is this hitting the market?

I'm going to bring my son to an interview at a Christian school so I can't dive deep into this thread right now. It is interesting though.

That is certainly one of the implications.

But seriously, I suspect both sides will claim this as proof one way or the other.
Can't we all just look at it as pretty cool that we've got electronic drugs now?
Seriously. This could be a cool thread about science and the metaphysical, but instead there's a lot of the traditional reactionary preemptive existence/nonexistence of God BS.

OK let's do that. So if they can manipulate brainwaves to create a religious experience, then what's next? Could they induce pure bliss? If we could create the technology and make it widely available, maybe that would be a more meaningful existence to the individual than any external pursuit could provide. Maybe we all get addicted to happiness and just quit doing life.
Could be that "great filter" that always comes up in the Fermi paradox threads.
