I use white 360 light about 3' above my head. I also wear a headlamp that has blink mode that I use to warn others.

Nasty little secret: Some kayak tournament guys want to be camouflage from other kayakers. Several purposely do not run a light in order to slip away in the darkness. They also camo during the day, dont have a flag, etc. I've seen some of the biggest names in the sport do it, then advocate against it the following week. A majority do run lights though, but there are many who dont know to and a few who wont. Unfortunately I think it's only a matter of time before a major incident and then laws/enforcement will change.

I rarely hit the water before safe light, usually only for tournaments. But when I do, always have a light.

I believe I've posted it here before but both my kayaks are internally wired with red/green LEDs in the front and a plug at the rear for a white light pole. The poles I have now are only 24" so I will soon be swapping them out for something a little higher up(4-5' tall) and will mount flags on them.

AYC is right though, in November I did a tournament at Cypremort Point among the worst fog I've ever seen in my life. The fog never lifted until after noon and probably ~50% of the participants didn't have much for lights/visibility. At one point you couldn't see a kayak that was 100ft from you.
