My nephew speaks, reads and writes Japanese*.
His advice to anyone concerned with a Kanji tattoo from a non-fluent 'artist' is to "not".
Of course, his IQ is roughly double the OP's, so I'll doubt the advice will be taken.
* A trip to JazzFest with him tattoo-reading the unwashed is fun. Lots of foods and consumer items represented on folks via their tattoos. Crackers, ink pens, household goods....
I'm sure the original intent was "Peace", "Harmony" and the like.

Ask and ye shall receive:
This differentiation only makes him a different kind of unwise.

I get what you're saying, but what should I do? Get an American flag? Haha. This country is so young and its roots are embedded everywhere but here. Asian culture is so rich and deep. Similar to reading about Greek mythology and stuff. It's endless and extremely interpretive.
I'm only 25 and need to save for things other than world travel right now. But like I said, it's on the bucket list.
Yeah, you are only 25 and with no real knowledge of what that culture is... I know a guy that was obsessed with Japanese culture and the stupid stereotypical shite like your koi fish. He learned to read/write Japanese and is actually doing a semester of college over there. He can't wait to get home and be over the Japanese shite.
Give it time and get something with real meaning to you.

If he's 25 and needs to save "for other shite" he shouldn't be getting a tattoo anyway. I regret my tattoo every day. EVERY DAY.

Agreed and in before any "Get off my lawn!" references.
The beauty of tats is (for me) that they are almost always a good way to know I don't want the tattee part of my world. Saves me some background work.
Ink profiling. Not a protected class.
There have been exceptions but they are rare.
