Kurt was infamously controlling and ocd. Idk theres any denying that butch vig took kurts raw chaotic ramblings and launched them toward a sound they never strayed far from again in the studio. supposedly they rehearsed ten hours a day for six months for nevermind

I would say Steve Albini took them in a much different direction on In Utero.. which I prefer..
Not saying Butch Vig did a bad job or anything, but there is probably a bitt too much gloss on it for me.. and that can also be because of the mastering.. The songs still shine through, though...
