I don't see any problem with this if this is an alternative to the gift registry.

Same here. If I'm going to give a wedding "gift" I much rather it be something the couple actually wants. A lot of couples have already lived together prior to marriage and have a lot of the essentials that end up on wedding gift registries.
Now if they're expecting people to contribute to the honeymoon AND bring a gift from a registry (especially those not invited, like in a Facebook share), that shite is ridiculous.
