If we didn't have one penalty in a crucial moment of the biggest game of the season, we had a great chance of going 10-3 or 11-2.

I get that. However, when you look at THAT PENALTY. It can and should be argued, why was it thrown on Vadal only? It equally could have been thrown on the Alabama guy who actually started it. The proper call would have been to either keep the flag in the pocket or flag both parties. So, it really wasn't one coaches player showing more discipline than the other coaches player. It was a Ref's decision to single out one behavior and not the other.

The flip of this is when LSU was flagged for trying to block a fg, which was missed by Au, and getting a redo for the only time that call was made that year to win the game. The ref chose that time to call the penalty rather than the coaches discipline/teaching of the player.

not that i disagree with anything the OP said but would be interested in % over number. as in i wonder what the total play number averages are for teams now and how they compare to the average number of plays in a game in 2007. also 2007 played an extra game vs last yr's team.
