Nope. The whole idea doesn't work without the squid.

The WHOLE point of the plan was to unite the world against an alien attack.

The problem with switching the squid to Dr Manhattan is that we all know that Dr. Manhattan is omnipotent.

There is no hope. He can't be defeated. The squid could be defeated.

I still like the movie although it just didn't live up to the awesomeness of the first trailer.

All of this.

Manhattan could do whatever he wanted. Teleport to the core of the earth and burn it out. Game Over.

I'm a huge fan of both the graphic novel and the movie. Everything you said is true but.....it's a giant squid. I feel like the movie would have lost most of the audience that didn't read the book. They would have had to add all the little side stories about the missing artists and stuff to an already lengthy film.

I think the current ending works just as well. The fact that Dr. Manhattan couldn't be defeated doesn't matter because part of the plan was for him to leave. He's only a potential threat to mankind. The world will still unify and work together to find a way to stop another attack from Dr. Manhattan. Whether or not they find a successful method doesn't even matter.

But the goal of the plan was to unite the world. Which worked with both plans.

Our country would not give up the fight. It doesn't matter if they did know he could not be defeated. The point of the movie is not whether or not the attacker could be defeated, it's whether or not the world would come together to TRY to defeat it. They would. No doubt. In actuality, there is no future threat. It was a one time attack that will not be repeated. It doesn't matter who they think the attacker is, really. The world is safe.
