Well it isn't for everyone and there is quite the learning curve. You're likely seeing why we get so much enjoyment out of catching them on the fly - it's the challenge and the hunt that pulls me in. You're right in that a fish like pike isn't usually caught on a fly but you can have a good shot at some monster trout throughout the country. This thread contains pics of myself and several others with some salmon, steelhead, redfish, etc that I think most would agree aren't too small to work for.

if someone local wants the rig, i'll throw in a Columbia fly vest and 6 inch forceps also. if not, will let the daughter do the ebay thing.
