All safe but Magnificent Mile would be my recommendation because it's more convenient to walk to everything. There are lots of hotels in that area.

I just got back from a 3 day trip in Chicago and stayed a block from the magnificent mile, that's definitely the area I would recommend. My wife Priceline'd the Sheraton, rooms were whatever but the property was very nice.
He hop on hop off bus tour is a great way to get around town and see a bunch of sights.
