i enjoy Thor a lot. One of my favorite things is that he touches often on real societal/political things happening today, puts the story a few years in the future, and involve a lot of history. His last few books have dealt a lot with the Quaran, NSA, the Fed, and our debt to China.
I'd recommend Vince Flynn as well.

Read those first, the OT turned me on to Thor when I finished those, both solid series if that is your taste.
