Rumor: Ben Affleck to Direct THE BATMAN for 2018 Release

It sounds as if Ben Affleck might be bringing some gravitas behind the camera to go along with his gravelly on-screen voice in his portrayal of Batman. A new rumor has surfaced suggesting that Affleck will not only play the vigilante in Warner Bros.’ Batman v Superman and both Justice League films; he’ll also be directing himself in The Batman, a standalone film due out in 2018.
Latino-Review is reporting just that, with the additional news that Chris Terrio has been appointed as the film’s screenwriter. This lines up with what we here at Collider have been hearing for some time now–that Affleck’s deal to play the Batman in a minimum of three films likely included the opportunity to write and direct his own feature focusing on the Caped Crusader. With Affleck’s schedule as crazy as it is, it makes sense that screenwriting duties have fallen into the capable hands of Terrio, who previously collaborated with actor/director Affleck on the Academy Award-winning film Argo. It’s a safe bet that Affleck will also be working closely with Terrio on the script, despite how busy he’ll be with his other filmmaking duties.
Now that’s not to say that Terrio isn’t busy; quite the opposite. He’d previously come on board Batman v Superman to tackle screenwriting duties after David S. Goyer’s early drafts. Terrio is also lined up as the scribe for both Justice League films, so the addition of The Batman puts the Dark Knight’s story in DC’s Cinematic Universe squarely in his hands.
Beyond Affleck playing Batman and Terrio tackling scripting duties in the already-announced films, none of this news has been confirmed. That being said, Warner Bros./DC is poised to blow the roof off of the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con. It seems as good a place as any to announce a new standalone Batman film, with Affleck directing and Terrio writing, and its intended release date, a probable November 2018 slot that’s intended to compete with Captain Marvel. WB/DC might even roll the entire Justice League cast out on stage a la The Avengers a few years back, with the possibility of two new Green Lanterns. Should be an interesting event.

I can dig it. I really liked his directing in Gone Baby Gone. Don't know about him playing Batman, but maybe he will do a good job.

Not excited. Affleck can't touch Nolan's Batman. I'll have to see Batman vs. Superman before even considering that this could be good.

He's talented as it gets
I'll never understand how he's been in so many awful movies. Like Reindeer Games. wtf?

Shitty agent and bad decisions for $$$.
He really F-ed up after Good Will Hunting. He was my favorite character in that movie.

He's had some pretty good directing skills so far but I doubt he'll do as good as Nolan's trilogy

While Chris Nolan might be the best director in the industry for such a film, Ben Affleck is not chopped liver. He has proven again and again he has very, very good director and acting chops. See Gone Baby, Gone, The Town, Argo, etc. He can do action very well and realistically. He can also portray intensity through the screen incredibly well.
I am pumped about this news because I think it means at the least, the movie will be really good. I am not going into it trying to hold it to Nolan’s insanely high bar.

Didn't everyone pretty much assume this was part of his deal to be batman? I remember that getting talked about a lot whenever the melt over affeck was happening

Please make it stop. I'll pay you to make it stop.

Sounds good to me. He's had a few great movies that he directed and starred in. I think people under rate him in that regard

There really needs to be a film of how this guy rose out of the ashes of Hollywood Siberia.

Most actors have shite movies under their belt.
I think Affleck is a fairly overrated director, so I'm sure he'll do fine in carrying the torch from Nolan.

you have no idea whether he can or cannot. While I liked Nolans films, they weren't the definitive batman films. I think they're a bit overrated to be honest.

I'm sure they'll be decent movies. They're just a sign that Hollywood has decided to squeeze every drop of life out of everything.

I agree, I am just holding back excitement til I see him pull off Batman the first time.

You're in the minority on that one, I'd bet.

While most actors with his early rap sheet, including Daredevil, would be forgotten, he still had Good Will Hunting to hang his hat on and keep him relevant.

He ate up all the cred from that by the time Gigli came out.
I need to see his version of Batman before I can decide whether to be anything other than apathetic about this rumor.

Hollywoodland, The Town and Argo were all very good performances after he bottomed out.
