Spinoff: Is the "Barkley" rule necessary or even a legitimate rule in today's L

I get back in the 90s that they were trying new rules out to open up the game, before handchecking truly went away and the illegal defense rules were put into place....but really is there a great difference between guards like Chris Paul or even ball stoppers like Melo who face the basket and dribble away the shot clock for 10 + seconds and the back to basket rule?
Playmaking and flow of the game can come to halt just as much facing the basket as with a back to basket in today's game.
With today's defense teams would double anyway, but to take away an offensive players natural protection of the ball seems kind of backwards to me.
Isn't it about time the big men catch a break in the league? I'm not advocating for the grinding era of 1990s but the game can have a little of both, right?

You mean the Mark Jackson rule?
The rule should stay in place as it is now IMO. It's Very rarely called but the threat of the call keeps half court offense from becoming stagnant for teams with a back to the basket threat.

there seems to be some discrepancy in the name of this rule. I've always heard the Barkley rule and since he was the superior player I give it to him.

It's recognized as "the Barkley Rule".

Jackson was more obnoxious to watch because he had much less versatility in his game... and he would just try to do the 15 seconds backwards dribble on every possession.
So I have no problem calling it the Jackson rule. His style of basketball was unappealing to watch.

Ya I recall Jackson doing it more. It was pretty ridiculous looking.
I could see how the casual observer would wonder why there were 8 other guys out there after watching Jackson.
