Possibly bad experiences with blacks his whole life.
When I was a kid I was part of a poor white family and we lived in a black neighborhood. I couldn't check the mail or walk to the bus stop without being confronted by groups. Sometimes life experiences trump any type of parenting. Its no surprise that the parts of the country that bash racism so much are parts that are overwhelmingly white populated.
