I live in West U and commute downtown. I have caught a 30m + commute more than I can count, during rush hour. It is 20 minutes without traffic from downtown to sugar land, Katy, pearland. Downtown to the beltway is roughly the distance of Oneal lane/Shenandoah to LSU. Inside the loop surface streets can be awful as well.
All that being said, staying close to downtown is absolutely worth it, kids or no kids. You are close to everything for all ages. If you can swing it, I doubt you will regret it.

To those suggesting renting in the city until the wife is prego, that's the plan. Specifically asking about where we should look to settle a little later.
And others asked budget. Right now, the $250k range, but hard to say where we'll be when we're ready to buy. Hopefully closer to $350k.

Well seeing as the entry point for West U is MAYBE 700k-800k, its not for everyone.
