Cubs Thread 6/15: Castro Walk Offs Edition

Sunday wrapped up a great week for Cubs baseball. Finishing a 10 game stretch at 7-3. Unfortunately, the Pirates and Cards matched them during this time.
Lester pitched great last night. Ross with a clutch double, Fowler with the tying Sac. Then fast forward to the 11th where Castro walked off the Reds for the 2nd time in a row.
Kris Bryant's hit streak is up to 11 games
Bullpen has been lights out over the last month.
Everyone's love/hate relationship with Castro is at a love right now.
This will be a fun week for the Cubs, as we will get a chance to see highly touted prospects Lindor and Buxton
Arrietta vs Bauer today.
Look for the Cubs to make some roster moves, as they only have 4 bench bats.
Oh. and Vogelbach and Schwarber executed a double steal over the weekend.

We need another bat badly. Baxter was 0-4 with 4 k's last night.

For some reason, the last thing I remember before I fell asleep last night as Motte falling apart...I just rolled over in bed and was like go figure. I woke up and watched the condensed game on MLB At Bat and holy crap, what a great job by him getting out of that jam.

Baxter is terrible.
LOL at idiot Reds manager. Pitching to Castro with Baxter on deck.
Strategy seemed simple in 11th. Walk Castro, face Baxter. Walk Montero and face pitcher. (We were out of bench players)

IIRC, Castro was 2-11 off of Badenhop at that point. Even with those percentages I'd still walk him and go after Baxter.

I'm really intrigued by what roster moves could be made today.

[Tennessee] Jacob Turner allowed just 2 hits and one walk in his 5 innings on the mound. He struck out 3 and cut loose one wild pitch.

I was just coming to post that
You think he takes Wada's spot once he is ready?

Well in his defense, they weren't exactly trying to pitch to Castro. The catcher was set up about 8 inches off the outside corner on all three pitches. Badenhop executed terribly and threw 2 of those 3 pitches over the plate.
With as much of a free swinger as Castro can be, I can't fault a manager for trying to get Castro to swing at balls that are 6-8 inches off the plate. Keep in mind there was only one out. If you walk Castro and Baxter doesn't hit into a double play you have to face Miguel Montero and he has been en fuego recently. I would rather try to get Castro to chase balls than have to throw strikes to Montero right now.

Has it been 10 days for szczur? If not that kind of only leaves mendy...i suppose we could try Villanueva.

Castro was hot all series. Baxter didn't foul one off all game.
If Baxter gets out in a nonDP, you walk Montero to get to the pitcher spot.
Hindsight always 20/20 though.

@phish, Szczur was optioned on June 7th. So it hasn't quite been 10 days.
Toula, I think Price was banking on Castro's ground ball percentage...he's been doing that all year. I can't fault him for that, although with Baxter with 4 K's behind Castro I definitely question why they didn't just walk Starlin.
Lake was sent down for Schlitter (gross) yesterday. You would think Lake could be useful...I just have a suspicion there is a chance we could see an interesting roster move.
And to answer the previous question from another poster about Turner, I think the Cubs will definitely bring him to the majors at the end of his rehab as he is out of options and is only 24 years old. I just don't know if he'll relieve or start...this has to be the beginning of the end for EJax.

Bryan Price was banking on the fact that Castro did not have TWTW.

Most managers don't intentionally walk the bases loaded when they have first and second with 2 outs. Never a good idea.

quote:The one and only reason for this move was to help the bullpen. We were desperate. The last 3 games before last night the starters had gone 3 innings, 4 innings and 5 innings. That is 15 innings in 3 games from the bullpen.

But now you're without Lake for 10 days unless Schlitter gets hurt. The Cubs basically said they'd be fine with Baxter for 10 more days and they are okay without Lake with 5 away interleague games coming. It's...odd. And if you're going to help the bullpen, why Schlitter?
I could be hoping and wishing for Schwarber here...and looking too far into it.

According to MLB.com's Jim Callis, the Cubs have agreed to terms with first-round pick Ian Happ.
Happ will get a $3 million bonus, which is slightly under the recommended slot value for the ninth overall pick. The 20-year-old played the outfield and infield at the University of Cincinnati while batting .369/.492/.672 with 14 home runs, 18 doubles, 44 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 56 games. It's not yet clear what his permanent position will be as a professional.

Baez and Soler injuries hurt right now. Especially with our AL trip coming up.
I don't want two of Baxter, Lake Sczur in the linup, but it's going to happen.
It's the perfect time for Scwarber or Vogelbach.
Also, did anyone else notice on the broadcast last night that Theo told Buster Olney they had spots at the MLB level for all their top prospects. Would love to know his thought process there.
