I've always heard it pronounced Maddy-gwan. Every time on the way to and from Tiger Stadium someone said it this way

The hell? My old man grew up his whole life in Port Allen and all his people say Mare-in-gwen so I just assumed that was right

This is closer to the way I've heard it pronounced. Madday-gwan, but the n is really soft and the Madday is said really fast
