Solo had setbacks, increased budget due to those setbacks, and a horrible, horrible marketing plan. I think the first trailer for it came out during the Super Bowl when it released the following May.

Can it be that Disney doesn't know how to effectively market a "new" concept sci-fi movie (as opposed to we'll establish franchise [Star Wars])?

I believe this is the case. And I wish it weren’t. They’ve yet to get people interested in these projects. John Carter wasn’t that bad.

Rebooting John Cater wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Just my two cents, but the entire concept that Solo would need a backstory just runs counter to his character from when we first meet him in episode 4. The point of Han Solo was that he could have been any run of the mill smuggler or sketchy character/ pilot. There was nothing remarkable about him or his story other than his famous Kessel run. I think it actually takes away, rather than builds his story if the audience knows more about him.

Some stories are best left to the imagination.
