In 2 weeks the wife and I are taking our first vacation since having kids
My kids are 10 and 4
My wife and I have an 8 year old and 1 year old. I can still count on my fingers how many times my wife and I have even gotten as far as going eat out alone, much less going on a date since we've been together.
Some of that is our fault because we enjoy hanging out with our kids, but we just don't have anyone trustworthy within a 90 minute drive from us.

I think the first time we went away for multiple days was when our daughter was a little over a year. We spent 3 days in NYC for our 5th anniversary, and our daughter was almost 15 months old. She spent one night at one grandmother's house and two at the other's house. It was fun for everyone, without it being too much work on either of them. I think my Mom kept her first, and then my wife's mom. We had let her spend the night with them before several times, but just when we were going out on a date or with friends and would be getting back late. And we were always in town if something came up and we needed to go pick her up. Since then we took a 3 day trip to New Orleans where the grandparents did the same thing. That was when she was 3. And we took a few shorter trips for a night or two.
I'll just say that it is much, much easier to convince someone to watch your kids overnight or for multiple nights when there is only one. Now that our 2nd is almost two years old, I don't think we've been on a trip without either of them. My mother in law works full time so it is tiring for her chasing around two wild kids so she only likes to keep them for a night and day at the most.
