The urgent message Jon got from the commander of the mission at Hardhome said "Dead things in the water." The wights had attacked the ships at Hardhome.
On the show there's some truth to that by showing all the abandoned ships in the background

As for the water, there is a lot of folklore throughout history stating that evil things (witches, wraiths like in LOTR, etc.) are incapable of crossing over water.
