I posted, and got a response to check for DC coming through the speaker outputs. Reading up, that sounds and looks exactly like my issue. I haven't dug deep enough to know how to fix it, but its nice to have a lead on the problem.

Audio classics in Binghamton, New York is about as good as it gets for repair. They are a bunch of guys that all worked at McIntosh over the years and can fix just about any vintage piece.
