Spearfishing in Louisiana

Started diving about a year ago, now looking to start spearfishing. I love to hunt and fish and this seems as it is both sports combined. Anyone know of any charters that do such, or do spearfishing on your own and need a partner to show the ropes to?

Troy Wetzel does it out of Venice. Haven't seen him for about a year, but he is long time customer and loves spearfishing.

He would be a great person to learn from.

I've been free diving lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain for catfish for 20 years. When this rain quits flushing dirty water out the rivers, it's game on.

That would be nice. Id rather give them some gas money and just go have fun with them instead of going on an actual charter.

Nascar fan and I went to the nice, clear water of Caney Lake the other day and he was tryin' to teach me how to spearfish,,, I didn't even try.

Been going out of gifor the last 15 years. I dont know if any charter guy would take the risk of someone inexperienced. I always started my friend with a polespear to shoot smallangroves, triggers etc to get ise to hamdling a fish underwater. Often times lots of current and vis issues on rigs, so if u just got certified u need to get very comfortable with yourself and your gear underwtaer. Speargun add another level of complication with cable and fish pulling on other end. Dont rush into it, your life is at stake. Learn from someone but take it slow.

Oh I def don't want to be wrangling some huge lunker at this point. Hell I would be contempt with just going and watching how its done at this point.

I'm a newer diver, I would pay gas to watch.

Bootlegger, I'm sure I've bumped into you out on maurepas or lake ponchartrain. I've been diving it for about 8 years now

On a good day you'll be able to see about 4'.
lsuson, I'm sure we've crossed paths out there. If not, we'll have to meet up when the water's good and load the boat with em

What's your personal best yellow? Mines only 30 lbs. For the first few years of diving, I couldn't kill a yellow to save my life. Now I look for them exclusively. On a good day I'll shoot 4-6 yellows. Didn't dive much last year, but the year before I missed a 40 pounder that was coming out a hole as I pulled up to him.

Mine was about 25 I guess. Love shooting a good icechest full of yellers. They used to be hard to come by, but seem to be making a comeback. Shot several good ones last fall.
