I guess it's because I've never had a bag lost but I just don't mind checking a bag. It takes an extra 20 minutes after I land to grab it and I can bring what I need.

I may sound like a chick but I bring enough shoes/boots when I go on vacation to fill a carry on

I see no need not to check a bag if I'm going away for a week and the checked bag is free. I also travel with a laptop to check in with and work if necessary and generally take camera equipment so my backpack is loaded with that stuff.

For shorter trips I'll generally just pack a carry on.

Twenty minutes? You either fly very efficient airports or very small planes

Anyway, I've gotten out of some very long delays by being flexible with flights in ways that wouldn't be possible had I checked a bag.

As for shoes, if you can't get by with three pair: one of your feet and two in your bag, it's time to revisit your quality vs quantity equation

ETA: The biggest time saver about not checking a bag is check in. I check in online, walk straight to security, then to my gate. I've parked at the airport 45m before my flight was scheduled to take off and still made it to my gate before they called my zone. Showing up to the airport two hours early just in case there is a giant line to check my bag sounds hellacious to me.
