Is there going to be a black bear season in the future? (not that I'm interested in eating bear)

quote:

The Louisiana black bear is "saved" and no longer needs the protections of the Endangered Species Act, according to a news release from the Center for the Biological Diversity.

Gov. Bobby Jindal, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are expected to hold a press conference on the subject Wednesday (May 20) afternoon.

The Louisiana black bear has met recovery goals 10 years ahead of schedule, according to the Center for Biological Diversity.

quote:

The Louisiana black bear — nicknamed for Teddy Roosevelt after he chose not to shoot one while hunting in Louisiana — is one of 16 unique subspecies of American black bears. Historically these animals ranged throughout Louisiana and into Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas. The Service protected them under the Act in 1992 because of pressures from hunting and habitat destruction and fragmentation. It is estimated there were only a few hundred bears at the time of listing.

quote:

Since listing under the Act, four breeding subpopulations of Louisiana black bears have emerged, likely supporting more than 500 bears. The areas supporting Louisiana black bear breeding subpopulations have increased more than 430 percent, from 340,000 acres to more than 1.4 million acres in Louisiana and Mississippi.

I surely don't understand the thrill in killing a bear, but to each his own.

Can you eat a bear? Or is it like killing a big coon?

I'd kill one if their population was at a nuisance level in a particular area.

It's a long shot from Louisiana to that sign along 61 in MS, I would have declined to shoot too.

And whoever says they wouldn't shoot one has never had these little greedy boogers on their land. All they do is eat and hide, worse than a coon in your trash.

Don't understand hunting bear at all myself. Not much sport with gun, maybe with knife or bow.

Read the very early history of Louisiana/Mississippi area where the Natchez Indians were not "scared" of bears at all. They knew when they were traveling and they would meet bears on the trail, they would simply get off the trail and leave the bears alone, particularily with cubs.
But I don't understand paid high fenced "hunting" either.

We've got thousands up here in East TN. Can't imagine taking one out unless I was forced to.

Enjoy them and what they bring to the mountains too much to kill one just to say that I did.

Hogs/deer/coon/turkey are a different story
