For the most part I agree, but not for someone who doesn't know what they are looking at. Home inspectors can at least alert the homeowner to problems that they may have overlooked. Better to pay someone a couple hundred bucks for some peace of mind.

They might find misc stuff to make you think you're getting your money's worth but the biggest issue is always structural concerns imo and for that you're better off getting a report from an engineer.
It's pointless to pay $400 for some guy to tell you that you need gfci outlets in the kitchen and bathroom.
