whats your point, if its not to try to coyly defend Alabama against the Ivies?
My point is there are no guarantees in life. People are just assuming that if he goes Ivy League, he makes way more money.
And like I said, I'm not trying to defend Alabama. It blows my mind why he wouldn't go to Stanford, UVA, Notre Dame, etc. instead of Alabama. I just think the whole connection/degree factor is severely overblown for Ivies compared to other elite universities around the country.

ivy league grads make more money on avg than alabama (or any SEC college grad); we have quantifiable evidence that those connections are valuable.
so, hardly overblown
so, hardly overblown

I have some friends/colleagues who double-downed with private school for undergrad and medical school.
I've also seen these same friends/colleagues in residencies right alongside guys who went the Nicholls State undergrad-LSU HSC Shreveport med school route.
Dr Thibodaux might not have 2 prestigious pieces of paper hanging behind his desk, but he's also not 26 years old with a cool half million in student loan debt.

All Ivy League undergrad students graduate debt free. Ivy League undergrad schools are very small and most students know each other. It is very similar to attending a large high school. The networking opportunities at other schools aren't even in the same ball park. The vast majority of these kids come from the most successful families worldwide.

Their farts smell like roses too.

What a fricking idiot. Someone needs to explain to this kid how the world works, unless he knows he couldn't compete at those schools.....

Of course but they don't consider that a bad thing like you obviously do. All Ivy League grads work their arse off in the real world, it's why they get in and it's why most because captains of industry. Sure a lot have family but they also are brilliant people that do whatever it takes. You need to in order to become a real success in this world.

Nobody ever said ivy league schools aren't great. But you can't send any kid from the south up to Harvard and expect them to succeed. I'm not even talking about school either. You think these "old money" kids want to hang out with some middle class kid from the memphis suburbs? Probably not. The real connections people are talking about aren't as easy to make as people are led to believe.
You sure about that? I heard a story about this black kid very similar to this one that came from a very poor family in Hawaii and attended Harvard and he did ok even though he had ZERO connections before he got there. In fact, he is currently changing the world more than any of the white rich kids who attended with connections.

All Ivy League undergrad students graduate debt free.

Turning down Ivy League for LSU is pretty common here on the OT

and that's great for prescribing my 3 year old antibiotics but when I have something serious I probably won't be calling dr thibodeax

Why in the frick did he apply to so many schools?
Posted on 5/18/15 at 6:14 am to crankbait
So he could turn them all down.

The brother of a girl I used to date, from Shreveport, graduated from Harvard. I know a guy from Lake Charles who went to Princeton. A distant cousin, from Arkansas, is a Columbia grad, as is my GF, who is from New Orleans. People from the South can and do go to the Ivy League and succeed.

I'm taking both sides of the argument in back to back posts, but here goes. The head of pediatric Endocrinology at the UW-Madison medical school graduated from ULL (when it was USL) and LSU-Shreveport. Her brother went the same route and is a neurosurgeon in Jackson.

I wasn't going to an Ivy though for undergrad. With all the financial aid available at these elite schools,

I need to clarify, I'm not saying Bama is better than Harvard . But free Bama is better than $$$ Harvard. Yes, on average Harvard grads make more money, no doubt. But, that is not gaurenteed . You don't know what life has in store for you.

I'd qualify that a little further: If you're going into medicine, absolutely. You'll still end up being a doctor and there won't be much difference in your earning potential.
If you're going into another field, you might want the Ivy degree even if you have to take on debt for it.
