It can really mess up the EVAP system in your car. Same reason your engine light will come on if your gas cap doesn't have a good seal. It doesn't happen all the time, but why chance it along with the possibilities of a fire.

While I am all about science, there are just some things that are based on common sense instead of analysis of data...I would say that not running an internal combustion engine in a hazardous atmosphere would fall into that category...

Where I live it is freezing arse cold 7 months a year. The wind is usually blowing too. Hell yes I leave it running and Hell yes I get back in the car. Say what you want.
