I don't see how the date of the coin indicates when the abbies appeared. I thought the only purpose for the coin was to prove that the people in Wayward Pines were at a time in the future well after 2095.

This is what I'm thinking. I don't think the guy figured out that humans would devolve and wipe out the rest of the humans. I think he and the government created them to "thin the herd" so to speak, and create a better society.

The date is significant because that's the last year they minted coins (the teacher mentioned this). In other words, that's around the time the shite hit the fan so hard that humanity itself went down the shitter. Think how far we would have to fall as a country for coins to never be printed again, then apply that to the entire world (as far as we know).
