I don't think he'll look like an idiot. If that happens, I think their plan would've worked perfectly.

My belief is that Goodell sat down with Kraft and said look, the other owners are out for blood. I'm going to have to hit you with something to keep up appearances. I can't make it seem like I'm taking it easy on you. Brady will get a suspension, he can appeal it down to two games. By the time he appeals it to two games, no one cares anymore. That way, the penalty really isn't that bad and the public's bloodlust is satisfied.

And Kraft is selling it perfectly, saying their friendship is dead and all of that. Whatever.

And this would've been the dumb thing for him to do. The other 31 owners (not to mention the public) would never stand for that. That's what people forget. Kraft isn't the only one Goodell answers to.
