Why do I keep hearing this? It makes me cringe when I hear that an SEC title doesn't matter. Why would a conference title not matter?
because it doesn't, you don't get a trophy, you don't get an auto bid into the tourney, you just get the best seed in the conference tourney.
The way LSU has played assuming we don't go 0-5 we should have a top 8 seed, and that is all that matters.
let me ask you this simple question
what would you rather have.
1) best conference record at end of season, win SEC tourney, don't win it all
2) don't have best conference record at end of season, don't win SEC tourney, but win it all.
having a top 8 seed is much more important than winning your conference.

It is obvious that winning it all is the ultimate goal. If you hit all but one of your goals of the ultimate championship are those young men irrelevant? They played their hearts out for their school and themselves.
We are all better for that.

awesome hypothetical. you ask which one we would rather have which is completely different from saying one of the option is completely irrelevant.

because it doesn't
An SEC title always matters.

you just get the best seed in the conference tourney
And an SEC championship.

False dichotomy. Of course anyone would rather a national title than an SEC title, but that doesn't mean an SEC title is meaningless, and it certainly doesn't mean that winning one makes winning the other any less likely.
If you are comparing two things, you have to make the same assumptions (i.e. winning the NC or not) for both. If you assume winning the NC in one case and not winning it in the other, you aren't comparing the two things in question, you are just comparing winning the NC with not winning it.

I disagree. Obviously, winning the NC is more important than winning the SEC and going to the CWS is probably more important, too, but just having a top 8 seed vs. having an SEC title, assuming you don't go the CWS or win the NC either way? I think most people would rather have the SEC title. In any event, even if the national seed were more important than the conference title, it wouldn't mean the conference title is meaningless.
In my opinion, in order of importance, the major accomplishments a team can have in a baseball season are:
1) National championship
2) CWS appearance
3) SEC championship
4) Super regional appearance
5) SEC tournament championship
At most, maybe you would switch #3 and #4, but that would still keep an SEC championship among the meaningful things a team can accomplish.
