By my own logic the police don't want anyone feeling like a suspect. They don't want anyone they talk to to feel attacked. They want people to cooperate.
Usually, the only time suspects names are released is because the police are looking for them and might need to publics help or to warn the public of a possible danger.

Then why say anything? By reiterating he is not a suspect, they set themselves up for egg on their faces if he does become one.
They have done pretty much all they can outside of arresting someone else.
