Stark's two defining characteristics are his genius and his narcissism (they also threw in PTSD and paranoia in IM3). You look at one and wish to ignore the other. He is smart enough to build Ultron, but too arrogant to relaize its a bad idea. That's not stupidity, it's arrogance. Which is a defining trait of his.
Everything about deciding to build Ultron and then being able to do it is within Stark's well-established character.

Look buddy, we disagree. I don't like the direction of Iron Man anymore. If you have a problem with that, deal with it.

I have no objection to whether you like or dislike the direction of Tony Stark. MY objection is your argument that this characterization cuts against the Tony Stark that has been established in prior films. I think that is plainly false.
Whether you liked it is irrelevant. But if he did something out of character, that's a flaw in the writing. And Stark's actions are well-rooted in the character established.

Well I feel like you are ignoring some of Tony Starks characteristics from previous films also. Is it possible that we have perceived Tony Stark in different ways, sure. I've seen a brilliant, smart arse, funny, guy who wanted to save people. That is not who I see anymore.
ETA: He had a determination and felt a responsibility to save people. That is gone.

Take this scene from Iron Man 1 for example:
quote:That guy is gone.
Virginia 'Pepper' Potts: Tony, you know that I would help you with anything, but I cannot help you if you're going to start all this again.
Tony Stark: There is nothing except this. There's no art opening, no charity, nothing to sign. There's the next mission, and nothing else.
Virginia 'Pepper' Potts: Is that so? Well, then I quit.
Tony Stark: You stood by my side all these years while I reaped the benefits of destruction. Now that I'm trying to protect the people I've put in harm's way, you're going to walk out?
Virginia 'Pepper' Potts: You're going to kill yourself, Tony. I'm not going to be a part of it.
Tony Stark: I shouldn't be alive... unless it was for a reason. I'm not crazy, Pepper. I just finally know what I have to do. And I know in my heart that it's right.

I liked it more than the first one. Some really great action scenes, but Ultron was disappointing.
I also want to add that damn, this movie had a ton of destruction. I couldn't help but think about all the criticisms that MOS received. Will those same posters criticize this film? Or is it simply ok for the avengers to obliterate a city? Can someone explain this one to me (and not you freauxzen )

quote:which is what he is trying to do in AoU.

He and the avengers cannot be in all places at once. So he attempts to solve this with the iron legion, but that is controlled by JARVIS, which is limited by Stark's programming. JARVIS cant fully assess a situation for itself.
Creating an AI to control his bots is the best way in Tony's mind to protect everyone. He sees an AI in control of his legion (and bots later created) as better equipped to protect earth than the avengers/shield
saying he made a decision that is out of character bc it was a dumb one and that he should have known what would happen is acting like Stark never makes a mistake, this is something that has never been established in the movies or comics.

No, it isn't. The whole point of creating Ultron was to create a "global armor" for the entire planet. It's entirely about trying to protect everyone. Hence the repeated line about the mission of Ultron is "saving the world". Tony is not uncaring or unfeeling. He is trying to save the world, he's just trying to be the one guy who does it.

Characters can change. That's what makes them dynamic instead of flat. He's gone through some shite. Different shite than what he went through 4 films ago. He's different. We will continue seeing tony stark and iron man, but he won't be the same as he was in Iron Man 1, 2 and Avengers.
He will be Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron Tony, which pretty much means he will be like how Tony was in the Civil War storyline.

I agree that that was Tony's intention in this movie, but I never saw Tony trying to use AI that couldn't be controlled in previous movies. JARVIS has always been under Tony's control. It wasn't just a regular mistake, IMO. It was a mistake that a only a moron could make, IMO. You can argue all you want about Tony's history and what have you, but making an AI program out of something he knew very little about was a HUGE, careless, and stupid mistake (and sure enough). And that's something I haven't seen Tony do since before he became Iron Man. And even that didn't have apocalyptic repercussions like this one did.

Infinity War Part 1 will likely have a roster of
Captain Marvel, War Machine, Spider-Man, Falcon, Black Widow, Vision and Scarlet Witch and maybe Black Panther as their leader. With Tony Stark running the Avengers.
I think Cap misses out on Infinity Wars Part 1 because of the evens of Civil War, but he comes back and it will be Chris Evans last go as Cap unfortunately. Then Thanos whoops their arse and the Originals come back and you will have something like this in Infinity Wars Part 2
Spider-Man, Cap America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Vision, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Dr. Strange.
Thats a pretty heavy Line up right there
