Sure, but I just don't think that asking for half portions is as common as you insinuate in your standard casual joints. I know that one person's experience doesn't mean it doesn't happen at all, but I've never seen someone ask for such a thing.
In more upscale restaurants with flexible menus? Sure, I can imagine it happens some. But enough for "most" restaurants to have a button for it? I doubt it.

I gotta say, I've been playing Devil's advocate in this thread (partly because I've just recently become a newbie in the industry), but I have not really heard of anyone doing this, at least on a wide scale, and I tend to eat out quite a bit.
