my bass pro rigs catch catfish, 36" bull redfish and large mouth bass. it pretty much does it all I need it to do for salt and fresh water fishing. of course for the salt water I use this reel
as it has shielded bearings.
but for the most part they do what I need them to do. good luck man, and don't over think it. good quality can be found in many of the popular name brands.

I would buy two less expensive rods. One ultralight for smaller fish and a medium rod for the bass.
