I have always relied on using my dad's fishing gear, but I am looking to give the old man a break.

I am looking for a rod and reel set up to do some freshwater fishing. Pretty much anything between brim, bass, perch, etc. Whatever is in our family's pond on our land. It will be a general use rod and reel, not looking to build an arsenal. Since I am only getting one rod and reel, I would like for them to be pretty good so I don't mind spending a little bit, but nothing crazy. I like spinner reels and I don't need a huge pole. Something to handle fish anywhere from 1 to 15 pounds or a little more. I am not vastly fluent in technical terms, so some input is appreciated. Dad has a Shakespeare I usually go to with a Shimano reel. That's about all i know. Thanks in advance

I like Falcon rods.

Shimano reel, if you want something higher end. I use a Pflueger President. Does the job just fine.

I think k you are on the right track. If you get a good Medium action or Medium light action 6 or 6 1/2 ft spinning rod and a good spinning reel and extra spool spool you can fish for just about anything Fresh water.

No need to go real expensive. Shimano makes good Combos, as do several other manf. I would spool one spool with 12 lb mono and the other with 6 lb Mono.

I would stay away from gimmicky stuff like spool triggers and wide spools. I prefer a spinning reel with the drag adjustment knob on the rear of the reel while others like it at the front or spool of the reel. Make sure you get a reel with a reversible handle though so you can put it on either side depending on your desire.

For ease of cleaning you probably want to go with an Eva foam handle vs. Cork on the rod.

For more sensitivity and strength you may prefer a graphite rod. A fiberglass rod like uglystick will have more flexibility that will decrease its likely hood of breaking, increase ability to "shoot docks, and shorten your cast distance, but also dulls the sensitivity of a bite.

ETA: probably end up with several rods and reels but this would be a good all around start.

I really like the Bass Pro Shops brand rods and reels.

I don't have their combos but im not opposed to them. look at something like this:
