He was DC at Clemson for 3 years ('09, '10, & '11) and his first 2 years he fielded good defenses FWIW.
I'm not defending him, as I don't think it was a good hire, but he was able to field top 25 defenses in the first two years. It is troubling that his defense fell so hard in 2011 though.

If Nick Saban didnt want Steel, he would have never been rehired in an admin position or as LB coach.
