W-9 help

I got a new part time job, and received a w9. What can I write off? From what I've read it doesn't seem like a whole lot.
Also, I want to know how much taxes I will be paying, and need to set aside, how can I found out?

What? A W-9 just is a request for your ssn

You won't get the 1099 until next year. Perhaps you could shed a little light on this part time job? It's difficult for someone to help with zero information.

I'm realizing this is a big question.
So my income will be taxed federally in my tax bracket 25% which is more like 18%. And state tax rate is1-6%
Social security is included in my federal right? But will I have to pay an extra 7.5 % for ss?

I have a job at a hospital, then I'm doing drafting work.
Can I write off
Clothes
Miles from hospital to drafting
Miles from home to drafting
Miles from drafting to home
I think yes to all
But can I write off miles from work to hospital, hospital is close to drafting

UPDATE WITH NON CPA GUESSES FROM THREAD RESPONSES
You should be getting a response from one of td's tax experts shortly; however, don't be upset if they change your statement from "yes to all" to "no to most."

Is this a required uniform, or clothes that you could normally wear outside of work?

I'm pretty sure you can't take mileage for your commute to and from your home.

You can't. Unless your job has you go somewhere other than your normal work site. You can, however, deduct miles from one job to the other.

By rule, first business stop of the day to the last business stop. If you get cash from jobs... I suggest a bank close to your house for a morning and night deposit.

I think you can't claim your regular miles to and from work if your employed, I would be considered something else like self employed

"one job to another" could be confusing here.

How about looking for some "real" deductions for a 1099 employee? IE, materials/equipment/books/software bought with your own funds & not reimbursed (like stuff you read/use to keep current at your various jobs), any training classes not reimbursed by employers, professional org memberships and/or professional liability insurance, travel to prof meetings/conferences...

How so? I'm not doubting it, just honestly wondering where you're coming from.

Agreed. I'm no tax wizard but it seems apparent that the miles that are deductible in this scenario are:
hospital to drafting job. The rest is all excluded.
Now. Can he pay himself a car allowance on the self employed side?

I would consider hospital to drafting job as commuting miles since the 2 jobs are unrelated.
A good question to ask is "Would I have bought this item if I did not have this job?" If the answer is no, then you can probably deduct the expense. If the answer is yes, then you probably can not deduct the expense.
As far as uniforms, if you are required to wear a certain shirt (has company logo on it), then you can deduct it. If the company just has a dress code, and it is something you personally wouldn't wear outside of work due to your taste in clothes, but isn't out of the ordinary, then you can't deduct it. Just because you are a tshirt and jeans kind of guy doesn't mean you can deduct polo and slacks.

DISREGARD THIS POST: Owned by Hazelnut in the next post.
Look at Cub's post above this one.
I will never pretend to be a CPA, but he and I are thinking similarly. It's just two different jobs. Why would he be able to deduct mileage for driving between two different jobs?
As an example, let's say he works at the hospital on MWF and the drafting company on TTH. Do you think he should be able to deduct his mileage from home to the drafting office? Hell no; it's simply his commute.
Now, if he gets to the drafting office and they send him to go do work 20 miles away...deduction.
BTW...I LEARNED A LONG TIME AGO THAT A CPA IS AN AWESOME VALUE AND WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD. IF YOU TOTAL THE TIME THAT MOST PEOPLE SPEND TRYING TO "SAVE" MONEY BY DOING THEIR OWN TAXES, THEY GENERALLY WOULD BE IN A BETTER POSITION IF THEY HAD WORKED FOR MINIMUM WAGE DURING THAT TIME AND JUST PAID A CPA TO DO WHAT HE DOES.

I'm not a CPA either but I am a senior in accounting and am in my second tax class right now. Obviously, that doesn't mean much but I'm just saying I have been studying this stuff the past two semesters. I'm pretty sure you can deduct miles from one job to another even if they are different jobs. See the link.

This isn't the same thing as driving from one job to another. Basically, almost any time you go to/from your house, the miles aren't deductible.

And btw...the IRS Publications are very useful. They lay everything out nicely and have great examples.
Just Google "IRS Publication topic" and there is probably a publication available.
